COMPETITION FOR ST ANNA'S CHURCH // PRAGUE // MARCH 2011
A new kind of cloud settles over Prague's old city: a diaphanous scaffold populated with lights and music, dancers and performance programs; a floating Fun Palace, updated for networked publics, digital dancers, and social cyborgs. Surs les pavés, le nuage. Rather than prescribe utopia by tearing up the pavement in hopes of finding some originary terrain for collective action, our theater precipitates an everyday ideal: an impromptu collective, attracted to the dance, light and sounds that extend from St. Anna's church into the courtyard and street. The theater takes contemporary dance out of the singular locus (black box or auditorium) and multiplies urban encounters with dance: open-air dance plaza, performance nave, cloistered dance floor, elevated stage, floating dressing space and a rooftop bar.
